Resumes: Build-a-Bullet Point
When writing a resume, the goal is to communicate your responsibilities, experiences, and accomplishments clearly. You
want your bullet points to highlight your achievements, describe your skills, and showcase your impact.
An expanded bullet point has two parts: action and results. The action component uses an action verb [THE WHAT] and
a description of a task [THE HOW]. The results component shows what you achieved [THE IMPACT], such as quantioed
results or other concrete evidence. Below you will learn how to write expanded bullet points by using our [BUILD-A-BULLET
POINT] formula.
Build a Bullet Point Formula

WHAT
The key to an expanded bullet is
beginning with a strong action verb.
Review your tasks and responsibilities
and choose an action verb that best
explains what you did.
THE
HOW
How did you complete this task?
What skills did you use or gain
from completing your duties and
responsibilities? How many people did
you work with? How frequent?
THE
IMPACT
Let the reviewer know what happened
as a result of your actions. Why did
your tasks, duties, and responsibilities
matter? What impact did you have on
the organization?

SCA QUICK TIP: When putting your
expanded bullet point together, it is
important to write a few diferent
versions. Sometimes you will need
to edit the words you9ve chosen or change the
order to ensure you are communicating clearly.
When editing, make sure to pay attention to
the verb tense! Past tense should be used for
experiences you are no longer participating in
and present tense should be used for current
